Description
Tad Hai Yai Reservoir (อ่างเก็บน้ำตาดไฮใหญ่) is one of the many secluded reservoirs in Sakon Nakhon that are lovely places to chill out and do a little hiking. The reservoir was built during the 1980s to provide water to support the nearby Phu Phan Development Study Center, which covers an approximate area of 1,800 rai (711 acres) and conducts various agricultural development projects.
The building of the Tad Hai Yai Reservoir was funded by His Majesty Bhumibol Adulyadej the Great. The reservoir is composed of a an earthen dam, 18.50 meters high and 187.00 meters long. It has a capacity of 1.30 million cubic meters, which is connected to a water delivery system that feeds into the study center, as well as the village of Ban Na Nok Khao in Sakon Nakhon.
The Tad Hai Yai Reservoir has rough trails around lake which locals take to find their favorite spots to fish. For tourists, the woodsy area around the lake is a nice place to do a nature walk without any fear of getting lost. It's also a nice place for a shady picnic, and only about 20 minutes from downtown Sakon Nakhon.
Like many public forested lands, you'll see here a wooden hut, where passing Thai monks can stay in for the might while on a pilgrimage through the woods. If you wish to visit a tranquil Buddhist temple in this area, Wat Pa Phu Mai Ruak is only a couple kilometers away.
