Description
Wat Sri Chan (วัดศรีจันทร์) is a village temple in Tambon Phanna Nikhom, noted for its beautiful teak pavilion, the pillars of the pavilion being large teak tree trunks. The temple grounds are tidy, and the atmosphere is quiet. A small, charming Ubosot stands in the center of the grounds, and a traditional Buddhist crematorium in one of the corners.
The bell tower at Wat Sri Chan is the traditional 3 levels, with speakers on the upper level to deliver announcement to the village. The tower is rather unique in that the guard rails on each level are lined with blue and gold adorned Yaksha giants in miniature, who are supporting the upper beam of the guard rail. It is unusual to see these guardian figures adorned in such colors, but it matches other parts of the tower, providing a pleasing aesthetic.
Near the bell tower is a small pavilion, with a special statue where many worshippers make merit. The statue is a gold, Buddha statue atop an ancient tree trunk. By looking at the features of the trunk, you can see that it is the scared Bodhi tree, under which the Buddha is said to have achieved enlightenment.
If you would like to visit another Sakon Nakhon temple, not far away from Wat Sri Chan, we would suggest the small forest temple Wat Suwan Thadaram, and a bit further away, one of our favorite temples, Wat Pa Wiwek Chanthraram, with its many interesting statues and architecture.
