Description
Huai Hin Taek Reservoir (อ่างเก็บน้ำห้วยหินแตก) is a lovely, little lake in Phanna Nikhom, Sakon Nakhon. It is especially pretty during the rainy season when it is at its max level. It is surrounded by forests, with the mountains not so far off in the distance, providing a beautiful view.
Sakon Nakhon not only has the largest natural lake in Northeast Thailand (Nong Han Lake), it has dozens of smaller lakes/reservoirs such as Huai Hin Taek that provide beautiful hiking and scenic motorcycling opportunities.
On the northern and eastern sides of Ang Kep Nam Huai Hin Taek (which translates to The Broken Stone Creek Reservoir), you'll find two important monasteries: Samnak Song Bo Kaeo Manichot and Samnak Song Phu Hin Pun, respectively. Both temples have relics of the revered Lao/Thai monk Luang Pu Phang Kosalo, who spent his final years in this area, and said that the local forests were where he mastered his meditation practice and achieved enlightenment.
You can hike around Huai Hin Taek Reservoir, and experiment yourself with meditation in nature. The adventurous might even see if they can hike their way from the east side of the reservoir, through a small stretch of forest, to arrive at Wat Phu Hin Pun without the use of a road.
