Description
For decades Huai Sai Reservoir (อ่างเก็บน้ำห้วยทราย) was undeveloped and used simply for irrigation, but a Royal Initiative following severe flood damage 2017 has transformed the reservoir into one of the most beautiful and tranquil places to walk, run, or ride a bicycle in Sakon Nakhon. A 14 km path with solar lights surrounds the newly landscaped reservoir, which has also been dredged to enhance the growth of water flowers.
Huai Sai is located about 15 minutes from downtown Sakon Nakhon on the way to Udon Thani. The reservoir is a gorgeous place to take a walk at sunrise or sunset, with the sun setting over the Phu Phan mountains in the distance. Visitors will also often see grazing goats and water buffalo cooling off in the water. If you plan to use the reservoir path for a healthy jog, you can reward yourself with a delicious takeaway pizza at the nearby Fat Mango Pizza (just be sure to call ahead to place your order). The lovely coffeehouse Home Up Cafe is also only a few kilometers away.
