Description
Pu Ong Dam Sansiri Chantra Nakarat (ปู่องค์ดำแสนศิริจันทรานาคราช) is the newest and, we believe, the only exclusively dedicated Naga shrine in Sakon Nakhon. Completed in early 2023, the 5-headed Naga serpent statue depicts a sacred Naga that has long appeared in the dreams of the villagers where the shrine was built. Legend has it that the Naga is a village protector and a guardian of a treasure buried under the village.
The 5-headed green Naga (whose heads resemble those of a fierce snake rather than the usual dragon/serpent style seen at many Thai temples) is said to have appeared in the dream of the wealthy villager who built the statue. The Naga asked her to build the statue, and she honored the request. Now, the Naga shrine is attracting many visitors from throughout Sakon Nakhon, who have heard stories of many worshipers being granted good luck by making merit at the shrine.
Pu Ong Dam Sansiri Chantra Nakarat (ปู่องค์ดำแสนศิริจันทรานาคราช) is located less than a kilometer away from Wat Amalakaram, which is home to the largest statue of Thao Wessuwan in Thailand. There are large Naga signs on the village roads which lead you from Wat Amalakaram to Pu Ong Dam, so it is easy to find if you want to visit the temple first and then walk or drive to the shrine.
From downtown Sakon Nakhon, it only takes about 15 minutes to arrive at the Naga shrine. Incense is provided if you would like to make a prayer and wish for good fortune. If you would like to quench your thirst afterwards, we highly recommend visiting the beautiful garden coffeehouse Ban Suan Sayai, which is only 3 kilometers away.
