Description
Wat Ban Nong Sai Khao (วัดบ้านหนองทรายขาว) is a Sakon Nakhon city temple located about 3 kilometers from Sunday Morning Home & Cafe, one of our favorite places to get carrot cake. This city temple is only the 2nd Sakon Nakhon temple that we've seen to date with a significant orange color scheme, in particular the orange walls around the temple grounds. The other orange themed temple is Wat Pa Phuthon Phithak, which is also noted for its unusual architecture.
Wat Ban Nong Sai Khao has quite unique Naga sculptures, which are protecting the temple's Mondop building. At Sakon Nakhon temples, Naga statues will take the form of a dragon/serpent or a cobra. But here we find the Naga protectors taking a combined form, with 5 serpent heads set within a cobra flared hood. The entire Naga statues are white/silver, which also is unusual. To view more Naga sculptures, visit our page: Sakon Nakhon Buddhas with Naga.
On Wat Ban Nong Sai Khao's temple grounds there is a lovely orange pagoda with brass bell, beautiful Naga entwined lamp poles, traditional Kuti housing for the monks, and a crematorium with beautifully designed chimney. If you are looking for a place in the area to relax and walk, you can visit the nearby Nong Sai Khao Public Park (สวนสาธารณะบ้านหนองทรายขาว), which is about a kilometer away.
