Description
Wat Charoen Sukrangsi (วัดเจริญสุขรังษี) is a village temple in the Khamin sub-district of Sakon Nakhon, which is about 15 minutes from Sakon Nakhon Rajabhat University. There are quite a few temples in Tambon Khamin, including Wat Wong Sri Daram, with its gorgeous Reclining Buddha.
Wat Charoen Sukrangsi is beautifully positioned among surrounding farmland. It is notable for its striking Viharn, which looks to have been built within the last few years. The Viharn (or Assembly Hall) has a beautifully designed exterior, with traditional paintings of elephants flanking the entrance. The interior of the hall is equally impressive, with walls that are decorated with Buddhist art (murals depicting the life of the Buddha). It truly is a Sakon Nakhon art gallery, as well as a place of worship (be sure not to miss all of the paintings above the pillars, below the ceiling)
Wat Charoen Sukrangsi has two main Buddha statues. One has been placed on a pedestal at the front of the Viharn (which is beautifully highlighted by a background mural of the Bodhi tree, and a Reclining Buddha mural above on a drop ceiling). The 2nd major Buddha sculpture is found in a small pavilion on the very well-kept temple grounds.
If you are looking to go really off the beaten track in your Sakon Nakhon temple tour, we would also suggest visiting the rustic Don Hin Thong Priest's Camp Site, with its friendly resident monk, who is always happy to welcome visitors.
