Kanna Kafae (กัญนากาแฟ) is a beautiful new cafe, restaurant, and coffeehouse located in Phanna Nikhom, about 30 minutes from downtown Sakon Nakhon. You take the highway toward Udon Thani and turn left just before you arrive at the row of melon sellers, which is perhaps the most popular place in Sakon Nakhon to buy delicious cantaloupe.
Kanna Kafae translates to Cannabis Cafe, the Thai word "kanna" (กัญนา) meaning cannabis. This is not a Dutch style cannabis cafe, where you can buy marijuana with THC and smoke it on the premises. It is rather a cafe which is connected to a nearby cannabis farm (across the street), where they grow cannabis to make (non-THC) cannabis tea and drinks. This cannabis farm and greenhouse also holds workshops, showing local villagers how to grow cannabis and teaching its medicinal benefits.
Kanna Kafae's cannabis drinks are sold under the company's NP Green label. The cafe also sells delicious coffee drinks, and a variety of nicely made desserts. When you arrive at the cafe, you'll see that there are two cafe rooms. The first cafe is the coffeehouse, which sells coffee, tea, and cannabis drinks. The next cafe room is a bar/cafe that sells beer and wine, as well a few Thai food dishes, including high quality steaks from Pon Yang Kham farms. They also occasionally have live music.
Kanna Kafae (กัญนากาแฟ) is beautifully situated among rice fields, providing a gorgeous view of the Sakon Nakhon countryside. There are elevated walkways that stretch across a small portion of the fields, providing an opportunity to take beautiful photographs to share on social media. The interior of the cafe is decorated in a "chic" upscale fashion, but the prices of the drinks and desserts are low compared to Bangkok.
Kanna Kafae (กัญนากาแฟ) welcomes motorcycle enthusiasts, with part of their parking lot reserved for big bikes. One suspects that the owner is a motorcyclist, as there is a beautiful cruiser stationed usually at the entrance of the bar/cafe area. The Phanna Nikhom district where Kanna Kafae is located is a scenic one for a Sakon Nakhon motorcycle tour. We might suggest going off the beaten track in Thailand, and riding your motorbike over to Wat Chaeng Saeng Arun to see their large collection of Buddhist sculptures.
Kanna Kafae is one of the only Sakon Nakhon coffee shops to open at 6am. So, if you are an early riser, take advantage of their early opening time!
