Description
Wat Pho Si Sutharam (วัดโพธิ์ศรีสุธาราม) is a relatively new Sakon Nakhon temple located about 15 minutes from downtown on Nittayo Road (Route 22), traveling towards Udon Thani. Indeed, you can visit many Buddhist temples which are just set off Route 22 on the way to Udon, such as this one which has been under development.
You'll note that the entrance to Wat Pho Si Sutharam is guarded by a giant figure known as a yaksha, which are Buddhist warriors that protect against evil spirits. In Thai, they are called yak (ยักษ์), meaning giant. If you have ever visited the Temple of the Emerald Buddha in Bangkok, you will have six pairs of these similar giants guarding all entrances to the temple. There are also a couple on display at Bangkok's airport.
If you are on a temple tour, be sure not to miss Wat Noi Hua Khu (วัดน้อยหัวคู), which is only about 3 kilometers away.
