The Best Thailand Sunsets are in Sakon Nakhon

Admittedly, we are a little biased. But we truly believe that the best sunsets in Thailand are in Sakon Nakhon. This Northeastern Thai province also has some of the coolest cloud formations and colorful skies in Thailand, especially during the rainy season (May – Oct) and the peak of the cool season (December through January). Perhaps this is due to the Phu Phan Mountains and greater fluctuations between high and cooler temperatures. These cloud formations can make for stunning sunsets.

So, this is going to be a continually updated post where I periodically share some of the most beautiful sunsets and skyscapes that I see in Sakon Nakhon, Thailand. Most of the shots are taken in the village area around the Huay Sai Reservoir, where we live, which is about 15 minutes from the downtown.

The sunset perspective is looking across the reservoir toward the Phu Phan mountaintops where the revered Wat Tham Kham temple and ancient Khmer ruins Phra That Phu Phek are located. Legend has it that the sunsets are so spectacular here because it is a cosmological axis of the spiritual world.
