Description
Boonnar Art Space (บุญหนา อาร์ต สเปซ) is a new art gallery and coffeehouse in Sakon Nakhon (Thailand). The space also offers art workshops for children under the direction of the Thai art teacher Khru Toei at a cost of 390 baht. The new art studio is located in downtown Sakon Nakhon, about 50 meters down the street from Raksakol Hospital.
Boonnar Art Space opened in September of 2023. Local artists, craftspeople, and entrepreneurs such as Mann Craft and Tammawit Limlertcharoenvanich are enthusiastic patrons of the establishment, as well as local teachers.
The Boonnar art gallery is currently running an exhibition of work from the NEA CRU: North East Assemble Crew Artists Around Northeast Thailand. Items on display included graphic arts, illustrations, and paintings.
You can see the work on the walls of the ground floor, where coffee and tea can be ordered, as well as on the 2nd floor (where children workshops are conducted) and the 3rd floor gallery space.
Boonnar Art Space is decorated in minimalist fashion, so as not to detract from the Thai art work on the walls, and continues to be developed. The ground floor has drapes obscuring the way to stairs to the 2nd and 3rd floors. So, don't let those drapes mislead you. Simply push them aside to access the stairs to the 2nd and 3rd floor art space.
While we aren't sure of the origin of the name of the art gallery: "Boonnar" (บุญหนา), which is pronounced "boon-nah," it is interesting to note that the word means "to be densely filled with merit" and it is the name of the famous Sakon Nakhon monk, Luang Pu Bunna Thammatinno (หลวงปู่บุญหนา ธมฺมทินโน), who before his death in 2016 was the last disciple of the renowned Ajarn Man Phurithatto.
So, if you want to make merit by purchasing some creative artwork and supporting the local Thai arts community of Sakon Nakhon, please pay a visit of Boonar Art Space. If you would like more information about the art workshops for Thai children, you can contact Khru Toei directly at 062 5461441.
