Description
Upper Huai Sai Reservoir #2, also called Huai Sai Ton Bon 2 (ห้วยทรายตอนบน 2), is only 2.5 km past Upper Huai Sai Reservoir #1, with the popular Nam Dtok Kam Maak Fai waterfalls positioned between them on the same road. This 2nd reservoir takes some hiking to get to. If you are trying to locate this Sakon Nakhon lake via Google Maps, it is going to tell you to turn right when you have reached the destination, but there is no road to turn onto. You'll just have to park in the grass and hike up a stony path and then through some woods to get to the lake.
It is a lovely small lake with lots of paths to walk around through the woods. It's also a popular place for locals hunting for mushrooms, such as Het Ra Gnok (เห็ดระโง่ก) and Het Din (เห็ดดิน). However, we don't recommend that you go scavenging for any yourself, as you really need to know what you are doing when scavenging for mushrooms in Sakon Nakhon.
Since you are in this area, we suggest continuing on for another kilometer to visit the 3rd Upper Huai Sai Reservoir, and then a few more kilometers to Wat Pasutharam and Tham Thoeng Nak Nimit Priest's Camp Site, which is a rural Buddhist monastery. However, note that you'll have to turn off this road onto other roads to reach those temples, as this rural road becomes untravelable by car once your reach Upper Huai Sai Reservoir #3.
