Description
Kaew Kwan Cafe (แก้วขวัญ คาเฟ่) is a beautiful cafe and restaurant nestled within the rice fields of Sawang Daen Din. It is located a little over an hour from the Sakon Nakhon City Gate. The cafe also offers elephant rides for only 150 baht a ride (with coupon), and provides many great opportunities to take memorable photos.
Kaew Kwan Cafe's grounds are gorgeously laid out. The cafe sits on a hill above rice fields. There is a large patio for outside seating, including fish net platform beds that extend out over the fields below. A staircase leads down to a long zig zagging walkway over the rice fields, which is lined by sala huts on each side, where people can sit, eat, and relax closer to nature. At the end of the walkway is a pond, in front of which is the cafe's mascot: a large, cute wicker bear, flanked by small windmills.
Kaew Kwan Cafe has two menus: a coffeehouse menu that includes dessert items, and a full restaurant menu, which includes many of your favorite traditional Thai dishes, such as Som Tam Thai, Tom Yam Gung, Moo Yang, etc. The best time of year to visit the cafe is during the rice growing season (June - October), so as to enjoy the full beauty of the green, lush rice paddies.
Kaew Kwan Cafe is one of two places that now offers elephant rides in Sakon Nakhon, the other one being the Chang Puak Elephant Camp, which being closer to Sakon Nakhon city, tends to get a little busier.
