Description
Khaep Moo Yai - Branch 5 (ร้ายก๋วยเตี๋ยวแคปหมูยายเพ็ญสาขา 5) is one of the best places in Sakon Nakhon to get Thai noodle soup (i.e. Guai-tiao, Kuai-tiao, or Guay Tiew). As the word "Moo" in their name suggests, you can get pork noodle soup, with pieces of pork and pork balls (look-chin). However, what this Thai noodle shop is really known for is having one of the best beef noodle soups in the province.
There are 7 branches of Khaep Moo Yai's noodle shops operating in Sakon Nakhon (if all still are in operation). The original, and most recognized branch is near Kasetsart University, several kilometers north of the Sakon Nakhon Airport. The branch that we frequent is Branch 5, which is closer to downtown Sakon Nakhon. You can order the Thai soup with thin noodles (sen lek) or broad noodles (sen yai) in a regular portion (40 baht) or large/pee-set portion (50 baht).
We would suggest ordering the large portion, unless you are not that hungry and just visiting to taste test. You might also like to order (as we often do) a side order of beef (neua) to add to your soup or dip in the sweet and sour sauce that accompanies the beef side order, which costs only an extra 50 or 60 baht. They have a full array of condiments to flavor your soup, including peanuts (which are a must add).
If you want something sweet after your soup, the shop often has to-go packages of delicious Khanom Thuai for sale for only 25 baht for a package of six. If you've become a fan of Guai-tiao and would like to try Thai chicken noodle soup, then be sure to visit Kuai-tiao Gai Mara Taipu, which is close to the Sakon Nakhon clock tower.
