Description
The Sakon Nakhon Clock Tower (หอนาฬิกา เมืองสกลนคร) is located at a prominent intersection in downtown Sakon Nakhon. Completed in 2019, the red brick tower features 4 gold Buddha statues statues facing each of the four directions within a pagoda above the white/black clock dial. Below the dial are bas-relief depictions of famous Sakon Nakhon temples, such as the Ajarn Fun Acharo Museum building at Wat Pa Udom Somphon and the sacred Chedi at Phra That Choeng Chum.
At the bottom of the Sakon Nakhon Clock Tower, there are two covered entrance ways. Neither actually gives public access to the tower. That is, you cannot climb the clock tower. The one entrance way leads to a door decorated with bas-relief depictions of demon guardians, where technicians can enter. The opposing side entrance way leads not a doorway but a wall with a large depiction of Tara, the Buddhist Goddess of mercy and compassion. She protects people's earthly and spiritual journey along the path to enlightenment, as well as helps us to “cross to the other shore” when our earthly travels are over.
In Hindu tradition, Tara is viewed as the Great Goddess of Wisdom, as well as the devoted Mother of Caring. Her name means "savioress" in Sanskrit, and she is invoked when people are feeling lost and confused, and need guidance in their life.
If you are visiting the Sakon Nakhon Clock Tower on foot, be sure to check out Kuai-tiao Gai Mara Taipu for the best Chicken leg noodle soup in the area. It is located just a little ways up the side street that runs perpendicular to the main road on which the tower is located.
