Description
Wat Phu Danhang (วัดภูดานฮัง) is a quaint rural temple that you can visit on your way to the Nam Dtok Kam Maak Fai waterfalls (ฝายน้ำตกศูนย์เรียนรู้คำหมากไฟ) or Upper Huai Sai Reservoir #1, both of which are only a few kilometers away on the same road. Wat Phu Danhang is a Royal Temple under the Thammayut sect, which is the intellectual center of Thai Buddhism that grew out of the Buddhist reformation begun by King Mongkut.
An ornate gate with fighting elephants protect the entrance of the side gate to the temple grounds, while the temple itself is protected by 3-headed Naga serpents. It is common in rural temples such as Wat Phu Danhang not to see any monks during your visit, as they may be temporarily away doing something else. But if you do see anyone (monk or groundskeeper), be sure to "wai" them to show your respect.
Update: Read about the nearby Buddhist retreat which is part of Wat Phu Danhang. This forested area is serene, gorgeous, and decorated with various Buddhist icons: Thailand's Hidden Temples.
