Sakon Nakhon is perhaps the best region to discover Thailand Hidden Temples. Even after visiting over 200 Thai temples in the province, I still discover fascinating temples hidden away down tiny village sois and dirt paths in the Phu Phan Mountains. I recently was surprised to find an as yet undiscovered temple on the outskirts of city, a few hundred meters west of Sakon Nakhon Bus Terminal, tucked away in an easily overlooked small village.
This newly discovered hidden temple is Wat Nong Bua Yai (วัดหนองบัวใหญ่), which is now one of my favorite village temples to visit. It is perhaps one of Sakon Nakhon’s best kept secrets when it comes to Buddhist temples, as I have yet to talk with anyone who knows about it.
Knowledge of the temple among ordinary Thais seems pretty much limited to those who live in the surrounding village. However, many Issan monks are familiar with Wat Nong Bua Yai, as it is home to a small Buddhist Studies and Pali Language School.
