Songkran Greetings in Thai and English

Songkran 2024 is upon us, so lets dive into some Songkran greetings in Thai that you can speak to friends, co-workers, or acquaintances in Thailand. To begin, there are 4 ways that you can say the equivalent of “Happy New Year!” to someone during the Songkran holiday. Each of these greetings you would deliver while placing your hands together in the wai gesture of respect.

1) Sà-wàt-dee Wan Sŏng-graan (สวัสดีวันสงกราน). The word “sà-wàt-dee” is the common expression for hello when greeting a Thai person. But in this context it is the equivalent of saying, “Happy Songkran Day!” This is likely the most common Thai greeting you will hear during the Songkran holiday.

2) Sùk-săn Wan Sŏng-graan (สุขสันต์วันสงกรานต์). The word “sùk-săn” means happy in Thai. Thus this is the more literal/direct Thai greeting for Happy Songkran Day!

3) Sà-wàt-dee Bpee Mài Thai (สวัสดีปีใหม่ไทย). Here we have the Thai words for year, new, and Thai replacing the word Songkran to form the expression: Happy Thai New Year!

4) Sà-wàt-dee Bpee Mài (สวัสดีปีใหม่). This is probably the least used Thai greeting during Songkran. This is the expression for “Happy New Year!” It is most commonly used during celebration of the international New Year’s Day, January 1st, rather than on Songkran.

Now, you likely will want to add a good wish or blessing after this initial Songkran greeting in Thai. One of the quickest and easiest ones to remember is this:

Kŏr hâi mee kwaam sùk láe chôhk dee ná (ขอให้มีความสุข และโชคดีนะ), which means “I wish you happiness and good luck!”

Sà-wàt-dee wan sŏng-graan · măai tĕung · kŏr kwaam chôhk dee jong yím hâi gàp kun láe nam paa kun bpai sòo pon naa-náp-bpà-gaan dûay theun

Happy Songkran Day! May fortune smile upon you and favor you with many blessings.

3. สวัสดีวันสงกรานต์ ขอให้เป็นปีที่ประสบความสำเร็จในทุกสิ่งที่หวังไว้ วันนี้วันดีปีใหม่ ขอให้สุขกาย ใจสุขสันต์ พบเจอแต่วันดีๆ ตลอดปี

Sà-wàt-dee wan sŏng-graan · kŏr hâi bpen bpee têe bprà-sòp kwaam săm-rèt nai túk-sìng têe wăng wái· wan née wan dee bpee mài· kŏr hâi sùk-kà-gaai · jai sùk-săn · póp jerd tàe wan dee dee dtà-lòt bpee

4. สวัสดีปีใหม่ไทย เริ่มต้นปีใหม่อีกปี ขอให้มีแต่สิ่งดีๆ เข้ามา สิ่งร้ายๆ ก็ขอให้ผ่านไป

Sà-wàt-dee bpee mài thai · rêrm dtôn bpee mài èek bpee· kŏr hâi mee dtàe sìng dee dee kâo maa· sìng ráai· gôr kŏr hâi pàan bpai

5. สวัสดีปีใหม่ไทย ขอเทพไท้อวยชัยให้สมหวัง มีความสุขถ้วนหน้าทุกคืนวัน

Happy Thai New Year! I pray the gods bless you to achieve your hopes, and that your life is full of happiness day and night.

6. สวัสดีปีใหม่ ขอให้สุขสมใจหวัง โชคลาภมีสุขทวีเงินไหลกอง ทองไหลมา

7. สุขสันต์วันสงกรานต์ ขอให้ปีนี้สดใส นำพาแต่ความสุขและเจริญรุ่งเรืองมาให้
