In recent years, coffeehouses and cafes have been opening up inside decommissioned airliners and military aircraft. There is the 747 Airplane Bistro in Bangkok, the Air Diamond Cafe & Hotel in Chiang Mai, and the Airbus “Coffee War” Cafe in Sattahip to name a few. One of the most recent additions to the list of Thailand’s airplane restaurants is the Kob Aircraft Cafe in Sakon Nakhon (Northeast Thailand).
It’s located inside the See Stars & Forest Resort in the Sawan Daeng Dan district, about 1 hour from Sakon Nakhon city. The airliner cafe is a nice destination for an day trip, if you are staying near downtown Sakon Nakhon. The resort is also a great place to stay overnight if you are visiting the Ban Chiang World Heritage archeological site, which is located about 35 minutes away.
It costs 200 baht for a ticket to board the Kob Aircraft Cafe. However, you then get your choice of a delicious top-shelf coffee or tea drink plus dessert or sushi that’s equivalent to the 200 baht entrance fee. So, it’s well worth the price. After ordering, you’ll be given a round alarm to take to your seat. The alarm will then blink when your order is ready to be picked up.
There are many photo taking opportunities while visiting this “airplane cafe,” which in Thai is called “kaa-fây khrêuang bin” (คาเฟ่เครื่องบิน). Covered platforms with comfortable seating have been attached to the plane, giving you nice views of the surrounding resort and nearby landscape. You also can dress up in a captain’s uniform and have a friend take a photo of you in the cockpit.
Many day trippers to Kob Aircraft Cafe decide to take a couple laps around the go-kart track that serpentines around the rural grounds. The cost is only 100 baht (for a two seater).
If you do take a trip out to the Sakon Nakhon airplane cafe, you should make the best of your journey, and also visit the nearby Prasat Ku Phanna (ปราสาทกู่พันนา) temple ruins, as well as the “City of Imagination” Phanna Buri (พันนาบุรี) to do some OTOP shopping of local Thai products and check out the unique pagoda architecture reminiscent of Bali.
