Ban Fa Prong (บ้านฟ้าโปร่ง), which translates to The Blue Sky House, is one of our favorite restaurants and bakeries in Sakon Nakhon. It is the only place in town where you can get Eggs Benedict, as well as other specialties, such as pork rib stew, creamy wild mushroom cappuccino soup, Thai steak sandwich, and Mediterranean tuna salad. In addition to cosmopolitan dishes, they have a great variety of both Thai and Issan dishes. The restaurant owner is a physician, so there is an emphasis on healthy cooking, and no MSG is used.
Ban Fa Prong also has an excellent bakery on the premises. They make their own bread, as well as carrot cake (with cream cheese icing), blueberry and strawberry cheesecake, black forest cake, and more. They are one of the only places that we've seen an apple dessert in Sakon Nakhon, that being an apple crumble topped with cream that's literally to die for. The availability of bakery choices changes weekly. They also have home roasted coffee, and they sell specialty loafs of bread for takeaway. While there are a wide variety of drinks available, no alcohol is served.
Ban Fa Prong's atmosphere is part of its attraction. They have a lovely outside garden area, with flowing water, various plants, cement tables, and a water wheel. The inside has hard wood floors, wooden tables, lots of windows (for natural lighting), and locally made merchandise for sale, such as handcrafted handbags, hats, jewelry, snacks, and more.
Ban Fa Prong (บ้านฟ้าโปร่ง) is located just down the street from the Pizza Company and Big C, near the old hospital, on Rop Mueang Road. There is plenty of shaded parking available next to the restaurant, so you can keep your car cool while dining (rather than parking on the street in the sun).
